TNO - Knowledge for business

Test facility for ballistics research

Does your protection system meet the requirements of today’s threat? Protection of property against robbery or terrorist attacks has become a major issue in our society. New materials have been developed to improve the protection of personnel, vehicles, shops and buildings against bullet and explosion threats.

In order to verify protection levels provided by these materials, tests under appropriate threat conditions need to be carried out. TNO has the capability to conduct these tests while it is accredited to certify products in compliance with international military or civil standards. To this end TNO comprises a ballistic research facility. Its laboratory is not linked to any manufacturer, agency or government. Experiments can be carried out in a unique test facility with a wide range of dedicated diagnostic equipment while using sophisticated data acquisition and analysis techniques. TNO can also perform analysis and evaluation of protection solutions including numerical simulations.

Support and development

TNO advises on the appropriate threats and standards and assesses the protection of metal, ceramic or composite armour material or protection scheme against specific threats. TNO tests and checks compliance with European CEN standards for e.g. bullet and blast-resistive shields. Its laboratory is ISO/IEC 17025 accredited for testing of ballistic protective items.

TNO is experienced in testing as well as certifying:
• safety glass;
• bullet/fragment proof vests;
• money/value/VIP transport;
• helmets/shields/visors;
• armour material.

If you want to perform small calibre tests at TNO laboratory, you are encouraged to use the online request form. When you have requests concerning large caliber projectile testing (up to 105 mm either KE projectile impact or HE shell fragmentation) including bare charge high explosives please contact us.
