Process Safety and Dangerous Goods

Since many years, TNO has built up a broad experience with respect to energetic materials. Our consultancy and research projects include the following aspects: hazard analysis; thermal stability and runaway reactions; safety during production, transport, storage and use of hazardous materials; reactivity and compatibility; gas and dust explosions; fire and flammability studies; and deflagrative and detonative behaviour.

We study and evaluate explosive substances, organic peroxides, self-reactives, self-heating substances, oxidizing materials, nitrate containing fertilizers, flammable solids and liquids, powders, and many others. Our facilities start with small-scale laboratory equipment and very sensitive thermal stability equipment and continue all the way up to the possibility to perform large-scale trials. Additionally different simulation techniques and software codes are available. We are involved in the development of new technologies and test methods. We participate in international research programs. Our scientists participate in expert groups and networks all around the world. Our activities are also focused on the possibilities of preventive and protective measures. Whenever possible, we can give added value to your investment in safety by combining safety with (economic) optimisation of design, maintenance, control and production.
