Noise: emission and dispersion

TNO is a specialist in measuring and modelling outside noise, particularly from traffic, industry, aircraft, with research examining the effectiveness of noise barriers for cars, trains and (test) aircraft. TNO's aim is to deliver practical solutions in respect of outside noise control.

TNO has various advanced computer models for noise dispersion in the atmosphere:

  • A three-dimensional radiation model (TOMAS) for traffic noise in complex situations, such as a motorway with noise barriers;
  • A numerical wave model (PE) for noise dispersion over large distances (to approx. 10 km), with various wind and temperature influences, also over uneven terrain;
  • A Eulerian 'fluid' model for situations with complex wind distribution around obstacles, like a test site for aircraft surrounded by a high noise barrier.

TNO has experience in large-scale measurement surveys using advanced multi-channel measuring equipment. In order to separate acoustic sub-sources, like tyre noise and engine noise from cars, use is made of an acoustic camera based on array technology. TNO also has a scale model that is able to investigate various forms of noise barrier. Assignments have been performed for the ministries of Defence, Public Housing, Spatial Planning and Environment, Transport, Public Works and Water Management, the European Commission, consultancy firms and special infrastructure project groups like the Betuwe freight train route, among others.
