Industrial accidents cause not only personal misery but also cost employers and society money. There is regular debate about the numbers and causes of accidents, which is partly attributable to the use of more than one source of information.

In 2001 the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment asked Consumer and Safety and TNO to compare the sources for industrial accidents. A method to establish clear, reliable accident figures became annual practice thereafter.
