ELECTRIC FLAME ELECTRICITY FROM WASTE In Asia and Africa many rural houses are not connected to a grid. But more and more villagers are discovering the possibility to cook on biogas produced from dung or organic waste. This biogas can also be used to produce small amouts of electricity. TNO has developed a prototype of a biogas socket that transforms heat into electricity. As lighting and radio programmes reach the countryside, villagers no longer have to walk to distant charging points. There are better ways to spend your time. “THE PROTOTYPE WORKS! ELECTRICITY WAS GENERATED TO LIGHT THREE POWER LEDS AND IS PERFECT FOR CHARGING CELLPHONES.” BERT NIEUWENHUIZEN — SNV COUNTRY PARTNERS BUDGET STATUS PERIOD Rwanda, Bangladesh SNV, BoPInc, DGIS 880.000 EUR Ongoing 2009–2013 11
