Course on the Essentials of Pulsation and Vibration Control (PVC) in Process Installations

Learn the essentials of pulsation and vibration control in process installations in only two days, from TNO specialists in Fluid Structure Interaction applied to the process industry. The course consists of plenary introduction lectures pulsation and vibration control, and in-depth parallel sessions on either Flow Induced excitation and AVIFF guidelines, or pulsations in positive displacement machinery and API guidelines.

For the 20th time since the start in 2000, TNO organizes this workshop for engineers in the process industry. As your and our knowledge increases, also the number of topics and of interests have increased significantly. In 2018, the setup of the course was updated to match your interests better, with a high attendee satisfaction.

Course content

Day 1 covers the different excitation mechanism that can cause vibrations in pipe systems. In a plenary morning session, the basics and types, sources and propagation of pulsations will be covered. In the afternoon, a dedicated session is held on pulsations and pulsation control in positive displacement machinery such as reciprocation compressors, -pumps and screw compressors. In parallel, flow induced pulsations are treated, with introductions to the different types of flow induced pulsations, multiphase flow induced forces and water hammer. The day will be closed with a lovely dinner in the city center of Delft.

Day 2 covers vibrations and guidelines. Again the morning is plenary, discussing vibrations in pipe systems and how this translates into (fatigue) failure. Also, the essentials of performing good measurements on your installations will be treated. In the afternoon, a dedicated session is held on pulsation control according to API guidelines 618, 674 and the future 688. In parallel, the essentials of the AVIFF guidelines is presented.

The sessions and their documentation will be in the English language. They will be hosted by senior specialists on fluid structure interaction:

  • André Eijk (R&D specialist on mechanical vibrations, API task force member)
  • Leonard van Lier (Pulsation specialist, API 618/674)

Who should attend

The course is intended for project engineers in piping and rotating equipment as well as for flow assurance and mechanical engineers who are involved in the design, operation, optimization or maintenance of process installations. Participants from operating companies, engineering contractors and equipment manufacturers are invited. Focus will be on engineering application of the theory. The course and the documentation will be in English. Yearly, some 25 engineers from operating companies, engineering contractors and equipment manufacturers participate. Participants from the past years include engineers from Shell, Statoil, Total, Engie (GdF-Suez), ExxonMobil, Repsol, NAM, Fluxys, Gasunie, DOW, Yara, CB&I, Fluor, Stork, Technip FMC, SBM, Jacobs, ILF, GE, MAN, Siemens, Hoerbiger, Burckhardt, Howden-Thomassen, GEA, Uraca, Lewa, SIAD and Wärtsila.

Accommodation and costs

The workshop will be held at the office of TNO in Delft, which office is located at the University campus of Delft, the Netherlands. The University is at walking distance from Delft Central railway station (20 mins), but also has good public transport connections throughout the day. The station has an excellent, direct connection to Schiphol airport.

The costs, including (digital) course notes, lunch, drinks and dinner are EUR 1,550.- for the two-day course. Early registration is recommended as the number of participants is restricted to 24 attendees. The fee will be reduced by EUR 100.- if registered before January 13, 2020. No refund for cancellation after February 24, 2020. Support will be offered for hotel arrangements.
