The event brings together the entire European geothermal sector and attracts many visitors from outside the continent. Geothermal energy utilization in The Netherlands has been experiencing a tremendous growth in recent years. Today, The Netherlands is one of the fastest growing European market, especially in the heating sector. As a Dutch innovation and knowledge organization TNO shares knowledge and applies scientific research in projects, develops technologies and is working together with partners globally to accelerate geothermal energy and realize a sustainable energy transition.
Geothermal energy is a promising technology to make the heat demand in the world CO2 neutral. Expectations are that geothermal heat will eventually provide about 10 percent of our entire heat demand. Geothermal energy is therefore a relevant technology for achieving climate goals and contributes to the energy transition. TNO is able to calculate the potential of geothermal energy. We do this with ThermoGIS a webbased tool
Within the Green Deal exploration research program for ultra-deep geothermal energy UDG, TNO, government and private parties work together to investigate the opportunities and possibilities for ultra-low geothermal energy in the Netherlands..
In order to maintain and monitor safety and minimize risks in geothermal exploration, TNO has taken the initiative to develop a standard for the industry worldwide with the Dutch Association Geothermal Operators (DAGO) and the International Geothermal Association (IGA). This will describe what requirements exploration and exploitation of geothermics must meet. It contains guidelines and regulations for the design of installations for the use of materials, the drilling for and the production of geothermal energy.
