Visit the Innovation Expo and be inspired by TNO’s innovations for large urban areas

07 Apr 2016

The Innovation Expo in Amsterdam on 14 April is expected to attract approximately 4,000 business people, policy makers, scientists and resourceful citizens. As the current holder of the EU Presidency, the Netherlands will be showcasing solutions for the complex issues urban areas are facing, and Prime Minister Rutte will launch the Sustainable Urban Delta. TNO is making an important contribution to this event and will present a number of ground-breaking innovations and joint ventures aimed at creating a dynamic urban environment where people are happy to live, work and enjoy their leisure time, an environment that grows and changes sustainably.

Changing cities, delivering innovations

TNO is committed to enhancing quality of life and boosting the competitiveness of metropolitan areas. Cities are becoming more densely populated, busier and more complex. In order to steer urban development in a positive direction, TNO is developing innovative concepts and providing practical solutions for today and tomorrow. Together with government bodies and members of the business community, we apply our expertise to improving the living environment and increasing its sustainability. Our focus lies on finding solutions in the fields of mobility, infrastructure and buildings, urban planning and the environment.

TNO will be displaying a number of ground-breaking innovations for healthy, sustainable urban areas including:

The intelligent bicycle which can warn the rider of oncoming danger and which has been designed to drastically reduce the number of road casualties.
An innovative method that uses sensors to bring infrastructure maintenance to the next level. This method was devised through a collaboration between businesses, road maintenance authorities and knowledge institutions.
city dashboard which shows real-time traffic and air quality around the city on a website. This was developed together with Rotterdam City Council.

We will also be presenting  other inspirational collaborations and innovative solutions for urban areas.

From big data to useful information

We are working towards healthy urban areas where residents and visitors want to gather, work and live, and where businesses can thrive. To achieve this we need a cohesive approach to the issues of accessibility, quality of life, sustainability, air quality, noise, energy, health and economic vitality. Using our expertise in big data and the Internet of Things, we have built systems which combine data from council sources with that of third parties. We can then provide this information in real time allowing city councillors to take immediate, targeted measures. Residents will also be able to access this information, in the future via apps for example.

Foreign interest

Our integral approach offers solutions for cities in the Netherlands. However, it has also attracted interest from abroad. We give advice on sustainable area development to the Chinese Shenzhen, the largest conurbation in the world. We are designing solutions for an enormous metro, train and road intersection in the new financial district which will be handling three-quarters of a million travellers daily. This project combines our expertise in the areas of mobility, human behaviour, safety, air quality and sustainability.

And that is also aim of the Innovation Expo: to show Europe’s leaders what we in the Netherlands as an urban delta have built up in terms of expertise and how we have applied this expertise to actual innovations.
