We focus on nine societal areas.
TNO cooperates with companies, the public sector and other organisations, to apply our knowledge and expertise with and for others.
We develop knowledge not for its own sake, but for practical application.
TNO offers you the chance to do groundbreaking work and help customers and society with innovative, practical and smart solutions.
TNO is working on the energy system of the future. We always do this in cooperation with partners. The Covenant for a Green Hydrogen Economy South Holland: test bed Energy Island Goeree-Overflakkee (H2G-O) is a good example of a regional collaboration. More than thirty national and international parties, including TNO, signed this very first hydrogen covenant on Friday 8 December. The parties undertake to investigate economically promising projects and where possible to bring them to fruition by way of a programme-based approach.
Goeree-Overflakkee will be an energy-producing island after 2020. 'Green' hydrogen can be produced from sustainable electricity. Hydrogen will play an important role in the energy transition, in both energy management and mobility as well as in increasing the sustainability of raw materials used in agriculture and industry.
Goeree-Overflakkee has been designated by the province of South Holland as a test bed for, among other things, various innovative 'green' hydrogen projects. Research shows that a 'green' hydrogen economy on Goeree-Overflakkee has promising prospects. The regional 'green' hydrogen covenant has come about on the initiative of the province of South Holland and the municipality of Goeree-Overflakkee.
Within this covenant, TNO is an innovation partner for new knowledge development and knowledge sharing arising from, among other sources, national and international hydrogen projects. With the use of instruments, technologies and lab facilities, TNO is helping to fulfil the objectives of H2G-O. For example, we making connections with the industry-driven Shared Innovation Programme Voltachem for the electrification of the chemical industry. This programme is an initiative of TNO, the Energy Research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN) and the chemistry 'Top Sector' and is committed to achieving the use of renewable energy in the chemical industry for the production of heat, hydrogen and chemicals.
