We focus on ten societal areas.
TNO cooperates with companies, the public sector and other organisations, to apply our knowledge and expertise with and for others.
We develop knowledge not for its own sake, but for practical application.
On TNO Insights you can read in-depth interviews and articles. Get inspired by TNO’s innovations!
TNO offers you the chance to do groundbreaking work and help customers and society with innovative, practical and smart solutions.
The impact of TNO on the Dutch economy was determined a few years ago; each euro investment in TNO is leading to a turnover of 3 euro in private sector and each single job at TNO is resulting in 3 jobs in the Netherlands.
These impact numbers show that the innovations of TNO boost employability and business. For TNO as a whole (3.200 people) and separately for our 9 units we framed our impact on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This framework is widely recognized and offers a common language internationally for reaching and mapping impact on societal challenges (UN, 2019). These global goals are the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all.
Within TNO we have developed a mapping tool that supports the identification to which goal(s) and sub goals we are contributing. This effort resulted in the conclusion that TNO contributes to all 17 goals. Most units have a core business on SDG 3: Good health and wellbeing, SDG 8: Decent work and economic growth, SDG 9: Industrial innovation and infrastructure, SDG 12: Responsible consumption and production and SDG 17: Partnerships for the goals.
TNO innovates in developing and emerging countries through the Innovation for Development program. Our system innovations boost local entrepreneurship, employability and access to affordable basic services for most vulnerable people. It utilizes the unspent local production capacities, increases the perspective of local people and creates business propositions for local and European companies in underserved consumer markets. In each project we frame our impact on the SDG’s.
In the TNO Innovation for Development program we make use of the theory of change; in most projects determining inputs, outputs, outcomes and impact. Because TNO’s core business is on innovation, our role is at the beginning of transition trajectories. Final impact will be realized by our partners implementing TNO technologies. We map realized outputs, outcomes and where possible the realized or envisioned impact. Impact can be diverse, is dependent of a multitude of factors and will become visible on the long term (4-20 years).
