Functie:
Senior scientist at TNO and professor at TU Delft on Robustness of complex networks

Hi, I'm Rob Kooij, I am a senior scientist at the Cyber Security & Robustness department and professor at Delft University of Technology in the field of Network Science. My specialization is robustness and resilience aspects of networks and systems. I am mainly working for the PMC Security Monitoring & Detection, looking at cyber security in the context of critical infrastructures, but I am also interested in applying insights from network science to other domains.

Professorship chair

Robustness of complex networks (Delft University of Technology).

Research area

My research field is Network Science, which aims to understand the graph structure of networks and the dynamic processes that take place on networks. Examples of processes on networks are transport of items (IP packets with digitalized  information, cars, containers) and diffusion (epidemics, electric current, water flows, human emotions). The Network Architectures and Services Section at the Delft University of Technology contributes to the fundaments of Network Science: we investigate amongst others geometric representations of networks, epidemic spread on networks, spectra of  graphs and network algorithms. In addition, we apply our mathematical knowledge to the design, management and control of critical  infrastructures, such as telecom networks and power grids. The topic of my chair is Robustness of Complex Networks, i.e. the extent to which complex network are able to deal with perturbations imposed on them. Using mathematical models we try to tackle the following questions: how can we quantify the robustness of networks, how can we identify the most vulnerable parts of the network and how can we mitigate such vulnerabilities. Within TNO I am applying my results to critical infrastructures, in order to make them more resilient towards both failures and attacks.
