Corporate Recruiter

‘Safety is not something that can be taken for granted. That's why the work you do here, in any position, is meaningful and has an impact on society." For that exact reason, Jane Duinisveld works as a Corporate Recruiter at the TNO unit Defence, Safety and Security and hopes to find colleagues who are just as driven to contribute to peace and security.’

‘I work at TNO for the Defence, Safety & Security unit where we use our knowledge and technology to create innovation for the people who work for our defence and security on a daily basis.

Working at TNO continues to challenge me because the specialists we seek are scarce, their work is complex but also we set the bar high in who we select.

Impact on society

People outside TNO don't always know how dynamic and progressive TNO is! Our talented people deliver impressive work, pioneering and versatile technologies. Our colleagues are as varied as the expertise they bring to the table. But shared passion for their craft and the drive for societal impact connect TNO colleagues. I keep being impressed by the immense efforts required for our national security. Our work has a profound impact, no matter what job you do, and is a reminder that security can never be taken for granted.

What to expect when you work at TNO

People who come on an interview mostly tend to have a relatively clear picture of TNO. They have already had something to do with interaction with TNO, for example during their studies or they know someone who works here. That helps because TNO is an unique organization. Not a university, not the government, not a commercial company, but active on the field in between.

I often emphasize the many opportunities you get to develop yourself at TNO. Because that's very important to us. For example, we have a talent development program that helps junior professionals to develop their (soft) skills and where they can discuss experiences with colleagues. There are opportunities to follow job-related training courses, but you also learn on the job, for example by working on various projects. And the freedom that is given to employees  is quite remarkable. TNO is simply a good employer. That is also evidenced by the fact that we have already won the Randstad award for most attractive nonprofit employer a couple of times.

Affinity with the Defence, Safety and Security domain

For DSS, I'm looking for people with a specific affinity for defence and security. Also, your reliability is an highly important aspect: every candidate has to go through a screening process because, you will deal with confidential information.

Furthermore, I look at education and experience, but enthusiasm and passion for your field of expertise are just as important. If you want to continuously learn and develop yourself, TNO is the right place for you.

In search of the right match

Obviously we aim for the right professional and personal match. Usually you clearly notice when all parties get energized by the conversation and it just fits like a puzzle. That enthusiasm often comes naturally when discussing the field of expertise, because after all, you are driven by your profession. That is why we always have at least one expertise (technical) interview and one interview in which the focus is more on expectations, motivation and soft skills.

Does the candidate always have to be a smooth talker? Not really, that depends entirely on the job. A business developer needs different skills then a researcher. In addition to current skills, we also look at the potential someone has. I often ask managers about the build up of the department. What are we missing in terms of (social) skills in the current group and how new colleagues can complement this.

That golden tip that applies to everyone? Thorough preparation can help. Think about the position and required competencies and how that matches with you and your experience. And what is important to you and where you want to develop further. But above all, be yourself as much as possible. It is important that we have an open and honest conversation with each other. This way we can, together with you, make the best choice whether you fit with TNO and vice versa. Clear expectations on both sides are an important starting point for a successful cooperation.’
