How you can use your Mechanical Engineering degree at TNO

As a mechanical engineer at TNO you are constantly working on valuable scientific innovations that bring great benefits to the business community and society. This can involve things like energy efficiency, reducing emissions, optimizing designs and reducing costs. Your work can range from materials technology to process innovation, from product development to process modelling, from new vehicle and transport systems to optical instruments.

Here’s a selection of the themes that our mechanical engineers are involved in:

  • 3D food printing, allowing food to be increasingly personalized and leading to the creation of new textures and structures;
  • Automatic and cooperative driving, reducing fuel consumption and emissions;
  • Truck Platooning, in which trucks drive cooperatively at short distances from one another on the basis of automated driving;
  • Thin film technology, an enabling technology for many large-surface electronics applications such as thin film solar cells, (O)LED lighting and (O)LED displays;
  • QUTech, which focuses on the development of a quantum computer and a secure quantum internet;
  • Heat battery, a battery that stores heat supplied by the sun in the summer and uses it to heat houses and buildings in the winter.

TNO focuses both on large multinationals and on the Dutch SME sector. At TNO you will work on a range of projects simultaneously, collaborating here with colleagues from other disciplines such as biologists, nutritionists, physicists, etc. As a member of various teams you will develop innovative solutions to technically challenging problems.

“The internship at TNO has given me an opportunity to work with a group of researchers who are very resourceful in their field. The work usually involves interacting with popular research topics across the world, which I feel is highly relevant to developing mobility solutions that are sustainable.”
Daniel Escobar Valdivieso

At TNO you can put the knowledge acquired during your studies straight into practice. You can develop your abilities in the direction you choose, as a manager, content expert, consultant, project manager or business developer. When you yourself take control, many possibilities open up for mechanical engineers at TNO.
