What will be your role?
As an economist/consultant in the Strategic Analysis & Policy unit, you’ll work on challenging projects concerning the implementation of new technologies and the impact this has on society as a whole. This includes optimisation, exploration, monitoring and evaluation of economic impact. You’ll carry out quantitative analyses and translate the results in an intelligible way into implications for all stakeholders in the transitions and transformations, such as government, companies and the general public. Your focus will be on macro-economic effects and broad welfare effects that cannot always be expressed in financial terms. Examples are R&D, strengthening innovation ecosystems, nature, air quality or health. In this way, you’ll help public authorities, organisations and sectors to shape and implement the Mission-Driven Top Sectors and Innovation Policy and to make strategic choices that create both social and economic impact.
What makes your job special is that you have a broad focus area. You’ll be involved in various relevant and urgent issues, such as the mobility transition, energy transition, digitalisation, industrial transformation and the transition to a more circular economy. What are the challenges and opportunities for the future development of cities and regions? What is the position of the Netherlands in global value chains and networks? And how can the Netherlands create long-term prosperity and well-being? These are all questions that can come up in your job.
You’ll work on projects with TNO colleagues and external partners in multidisciplinary teams. With your research, analyses, presentations and reports, you’ll contribute to the coherent understanding and interpretation of trends, developments and societal impact, seen in a broad welfare context. In doing this, you’ll support policy and complex decision-making. In projects, you’ll sometimes also take on the role of project leader.Read more about the department Strategic Business Analysis (SBA)

What we expect from you
You have great conceptual and analytical strength. Just as importantly, you can convince internal and external stakeholders of the value of your work by bridging the gap between technological developments and their consequences for society and the related strategic policy choices. You have a strong awareness of and are able to deal with political sensitivities and opposing interests. Your powers of persuasion will be useful in this area. You’re visible and approachable to both clients and colleagues. You actively develop your network and enjoy fuelling discussions with objective information and an evidence-based vision in a political and social arena. You also obtain contracts in the market independently. You’re not fazed by quantitative economic models. Other knowledge and skills you bring to TNO:
