At TNO, the Powertrains research group comes together for a purpose. For this to happen we want to make a difference to accelerate the transformation in clean propulsion systems. Society needs zero impact powertrains tomorrow, we create them today. The Powertrains research group has extensive knowledge in vehicle electrification technology, is at the forefront of the development of the Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine and makes acceleration possible for the use of Fuel cells and the use of alternative fuels. The group has its own state-of the art development and testing facilities. where we can measure complete powertrain systems for real world emissions and fuel efficiency and conduct extensive engine testing. We can perform measurements on an entire vehicle (up to truck size) in our unique altitude climate chamber, and perform on-road measurements, as well as battery testing. Within the Powertrains research department, you have the role of Fuell Scientist, giving you the chance to shape the technologies contributing to a sustainable future. Part of a team working in multiple challenging projects, both national and international, with key automotive partners, you are at the forefront of research and development focused on vehicle electrification technologies. By focusing on innovative solutions, you play a key role in strengthening and further building on our position in the automotive industry. Specific: • Fuel cell research in heavy-duty powertrain applications (e.g. trucks, ships) with special focus on performance and degradation modeling and control. • Powertrain optimization regarding layout, component sizing, and energy management strategy.

What will be your role?

Working in teams, you’ll contribute to multiple projects within a national and international context. Your research will range from powertrain optimization to performance and degradation modelling and control. In your project teams you perform multiple roles, such as technical expert and technical lead. And as your experience grows, so will your responsibilities. You will be extending your network and potentially initiate new B2B or funded projects. To reach your full potential, you will receive all the training and coaching you need.

What we expect from you

You thrive on working at the interface between research and pragmatic solutions. And have no trouble alternating between projects. Putting your cultural awareness and communication skills to good use, you convince teams and clients of your solutions. You are keen to develop the skills and knowledge you need to eventually initiate and manage projects of your own.

Other knowledge and skills you bring to TNO: 
  • A Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Automotive Engineering or another relevant field.
  • In-depth knowledge of fuel cell systems. And you are eager to research this field.
  • Extensive experience of modelling and simulation.
  • Experience of MATLAB/Simulink. And preferably of simulation tools typically used in the automotive industry and embedded software development. 
  • Excellent command of English, as you will be working in international teams.

The selection process

Please apply before 7 February. The selection process comprises two interview rounds. The preliminary interview takes place in week 7. The second interview round has been scheduled in week 8. In a final meeting we will discuss the terms of employment and your tailored benefits package. We aim to finalize the entire process within four weeks.
