What will you be doing?

At TNO in Soesterberg three different departments are engaged in scientific research in the field of Human Factors. This research work often focuses on how people perform in extremely challenging conditions. Simulators and experimental set-ups are often used to mimic external conditions and measuring equipment is used to assess the effects on people. In order to keep our facilities at the ready and to be able to support the research work with technical knowledge, we are seeking a hardware/mechatronics engineer.
Together with a software engineer, you will be involved in a variety of projects geared towards expanding and programming our facilities. You will advise on what is technically possible (and impossible) for various solutions, and be jointly responsible for achieving the solution. You will also be the contact person for our technical suppliers and the facilities management team.

What do we require of you?

You have experience with or a background in mechatronics. You are capable of consulting with researchers and translating their research questions into technical solutions with the capacity to address those questions. You have the creativity needed to devise bespoke solutions required for innovative research. You are curious and proactive. You are capable of working well independently and find it easy to maintain an overview of your own schedule. You are flexible and enjoy getting stuck into challenges.

What can you expect of your work situation?

You will be posted to one of the aforementioned three departments, namely Perceptual and Cognitive Systems. TNO’s Perceptual and Cognitive Systems expertise group optimizes situational awareness, decision-making and human behaviour through research on the interaction and cooperation between people and (technical) systems, and on the effects of these systems and environment on human behaviour and motivation. The user-centred design approach is key to our projects. In this regard, iterative cycles are run through with end users to design, draw up specifications for and evaluate systems that support people when it comes to functioning effectively, efficiently and safely. We carry out research with test subjects both in the laboratory in simulated circumstances and out in the field. We predominantly work in the sphere of Defence & Security.

What can TNO offer you?
