The assignment focusses on the improved aerodynamic design of very large wind turbines. Think of rotor diameters of 240 meter or even more, which makes them the largest rotating machines in the world! One revolution of such gigantic machine delivers more electricity than the daily demand of an average household!

What will be your role?

In this project you will study the aerodynamics of large wind turbines. Thereto you will use an in-house wind turbine design code from TNO and improve the aerodynamic modelling part. Calculations from this code will be brought into several research projects, some of them with industry, others with the most outstanding international research partners.

Your work will be carried out in our Wind Energy department. This department houses approximately 60 experts with an in-depth knowledge on wind energy technology.
Due to the Corona situation you will most likely work from home, remotely supervised by 2 to 3 Wind Energy Experts. When the Corona situation improves you may work from our offices in Petten and/or Delft.

What we expect from you

We are looking for MSc students in relevant areas i.e. (Wind)Energy Technology, Aerospace Technology, Mechanical Engineering etc with the following characteristics:
  • Enthusiasm for research and technology development;
  • Interest in wind energy;
  • Technical knowledge of wind turbines and aerodynamics;
  • Independent working attitude;
  • Knowledge of Fortran and Matlab or willingness to learn these languages;
  • Good knowledge of the English language;
  • Available to work at least 32 hours for a period of 6 to 9 months.
