What will you be doing?

Prevention of global warming through the Paris Agreement and international, national and local laws following this agreement urge the automotive and logistic sectors to come up with measures to reduce CO2 emissions. While electrification is a good solution for passenger vehicles or city distribution, long haul heavy duty transport still depends on fossil fuels for some years to come. This means that truck manufactures look for solutions to use the fuels as efficient as possible. 

The AEROFLEX project, funded by the European Commission, aims at improving fuel efficiency for heavy duty trucks by hybridization of the dolly and trailer and by reducing the air drag with aerodynamic innovations. Within the project the innovations are installed on demonstrator vehicles and tested on a limited number of roads. With simulation tests the innovations can also be tested on other roads (for example hilly or congested roads) and with different vehicles. The results for each of these tests, however, is only valid for that particular situation. 

Within the project we are challenged to take these results and use them to say something about the potential for all heavy duty truck transport in Europe. This task involves using European transport datasets in order to model the effect of these innovations on a European scale.
