What will you be doing?
Prevention of global warming through the Paris Agreement and international, national and local laws following this agreement urge the automotive and logistic sectors to come up with measures to reduce CO2 emissions. While electrification is a good solution for passenger vehicles or city distribution, long haul heavy duty transport still depends on fossil fuels for some years to come. This means that truck manufactures look for solutions to use the fuels as efficient as possible.
The AEROFLEX project, funded by the European Commission, aims at improving fuel efficiency for heavy duty trucks by hybridization of the dolly and trailer and by reducing the air drag with aerodynamic innovations. Within the project the innovations are installed on demonstrator vehicles and tested on a limited number of roads. With simulation tests the innovations can also be tested on other roads (for example hilly or congested roads) and with different vehicles. The results for each of these tests, however, is only valid for that particular situation.
Within the project we are challenged to take these results and use them to say something about the potential for all heavy duty truck transport in Europe. This task involves using European transport datasets in order to model the effect of these innovations on a European scale.
Upscaling the effect of vehicle innovations to the European transport sector.
In this assignment the following activities are foreseen:
- Analysis of vehicle measurement data
- Simulation of heavy duty vehicles
- Data analysis of European transport datasets
- Building a European transport model
- Traffic and transport knowledge
- Vehicle simulation basics
- Data analysis
- Software engineering
What do we require of you?
You are focused on achieving results and having influence and impact within TNO. You have a broad knowledge of vehicle technology, you are socially involved and you have a strong affinity with data processing and modelling. You combine these qualities with a good dose of enthusiasm to work on sustainable mobility, both in a technical and policy sense. You take ownership of your work and you are a team player who solves problems together with others. You are also structured, analytically and quantitatively strong. What can you expect of your work situation?
TNO is an independent research organisation that, based on its expertise and research, makes an important contribution to the competitiveness of companies and organisations, to the economy and to the quality of society as a whole. With around 3000 employees, we work for a variety of clients: governments, SMEs, large companies, service providers and social organisations. Together we work on new knowledge, better products and clear advice on policy and processes. Everything we do is about impact. Our product and process innovations and our advice only make sense if the client can apply them to improve his competitive position. For governments it is important that they use the knowledge to organise its policy more effectively.
