Internship | Analysing the performance of an automatic transfer plan making tool on actual wind farms

Do you know how the offshore wind farm managers plan the Operations and Maintenance (O&M) work? Do you think AI can (yet) do a better job than humans in that? Let's find that out in this project.

What will you be doing?

For the daily Operation and Maintenance (O&M) of an offshore wind farm, the maintenance manager/scheduler needs to make a transfer plan specifying who (team) travels with which vessel to do what work (for how long, in which turbine) and in what sequence. Weather forecast is used as a reference for the decision making, but the transfer plan is made based on the experience of the manager. For a small wind farm with limited resource (vessels, technicians) this might work just fine. However, for large wind farms with more resource, the decision making becomes very complicated and the human-made plan usually does not give the best performance. In this regard, TNO has been developing a tool called Despatch to make an optimal transfer plan with the help of AI. We believe our tool can produce a better transfer plan than that made by the wind farm manager, and would like to validate it in different wind farms with various conditions.

A wind turbine manufacturer wants to apply our tool on their daily O&M business, and they are currently collaborating with us to validate our tool in their wind farms. They provide us with operational data (status of the wind turbines, planned maintenance tasks, etc.) and weather forecasts, which are the inputs to our tool to make a transfer plan.

Work Description
  • Run Despatch with the actual wind farm operational data, and identify any potential error/bug in the tool
  • Analyse the benefit of using Despatch in those wind farms
  • Make recommendations/improvements to Despatch to make it more practical for wind farm operations

What do we require of you?
