What will you be doing?

At TNO-IVS we are developing software for ADAS and Automated Driving application in Cars, Trucks and Automated Guided Vehicles. The middleware we use in theses application is ROS. In order to save development-time and -money we need a simulator compatible with ROS.

The Current simulator we use is the Gazebo simulator. Aldo useful, it has also as some flaws e.g.:
  • Graphically not appealing
  • Slow performance
  • Limited sensors available

We know that there are other simulators compatible with ROS, but we lack an overview of all the simulators and how they compare to Gazebo.

We are looking for a student how can help us make this overview and will benchmark other simulators to Gazebo.

The study consists of two parts:
Marked study:
  • The student will define the most importuned key performance indicators (KPI) for an ROS simulator. Using this KPI’s the student will create an overview of all available (commercial and non-commercial) simulators and measure the simulators according to the KPI’s.
  • The student will define key performance indicators (KPI) for a robotics middleware and evaluate the performance differences between ROS 1 and ROS 2 given these KPI’s.

Realization study:
  • By using the previous part, the student will select the most important options end test them by implementing a benchmark simulation scenario provided by TNO.

What do we require of you?

We require that you have experience with C++ and Linux. Experience with ROS 1 or ROS 2 as a benefit. We like you to start as soon as possible. This study fits to a 20 weeks project (based on full time availability). We require you to work in Helmond at the TNO office to enable you to work with our tools and to have short communication lines.

What can you expect of your work situation?

You will work at the Integrated Vehicle Safety department of TNO on the Automotive Campus in Helmond. In this department people are working on developing software for automated driving vehicles. The developed software is tested in pilots and on the public road. (more info on the department: https://www.tno.nl/en/focus-areas/traffic-transport/expertise-groups/research-on-integrated-vehicle-safety/ ). The people are young, enthusiastic and driven. You will work in an open area, within your own team. One of our employees will be your mentor. He will help you to get acquainted with the department and give you guidelines for your research in order to help you to get the best out of it.
