What will you be doing?

Media & Network Services (MNS) works on "The Future of the Internet". This future is characterized by an increase of video content on the web, increasing numbers of devices connected to the Internet and Big Data. Our leading themes are distribution of audio and video content and media mining.

Media streaming via HTTP is quickly getting adopted as the technology of choice for the delivery of video over the Internet. Content providers such as Netflix, Hulu, and Youtube do not deploy their own streaming equipment and protocols but use the existing Internet infrastructure and industry standards for the delivery and consumption of the content they offer. In fact, despite the varying bandwidth conditions resulting from using the HTTP protocol, HTTP-based streaming applications work surprisingly well, thanks to their ability to "adapt" to the current network conditions of the streaming clients and taylor the parameters of the video stream (bitrate, resolution) accordingly. Examples of popular HTTP Adaptive Streaming protocols include Apple's HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) and MPEG-DASH, which has been developed as an international standard.

At the same time, the demand for higher quality streaming (HD and soon 4k), streaming to mobile devices via 4G networks, and game streaming is rising. These are the new challenges that international standards and industry organisations are tackling these days.

During your internship at TNO, you will work at the edge of innovation in the media world, as your main task will be to implement the next generation streaming protocols that can face the above challenges.

You will start by developing reference implementations of new media streaming solutions proposed on recently published (or soon to be published) standards. For this, you will work closely with the TNO researchers who are daily involved in the design and creation of such streaming protocols and are actively participating in the definitions of standards developed by organisations such as MPEG, IETF and ISO.
Next, you are expected to evaluate your reference implementation, and suggest and test ways to improve it, which will give you the chance of actually contributing to an Internet standard.

You will perform your research work at the TNO premises and in particular you can make use of TNO's media-lab, the place where we constantly develop new prototypes and demos of media streaming applications.

What do we require of you?

You should:
  • be currently enrolled in a BSc or MSc program
  • have a background in computer science, telecommunications, or similar engineering discipline
  • have interest in video streaming and distributed Internet applications
  • have a research oriented, problem solving attitude
  • have good programming skills (Java/JavaScript is a plus)

What can you expect of your work situation?
