This master thesis graduation project targets the development of a CFD hydrogen combustion model including Direct Injection of Hydrogen. The modelled hydrogen (i.e. zero CO2) combustion concept is the low temperature (lean burn) advanced Spark Ignition concept which has great potential in achieving high efficiency in combination with ultra-low pollutant emissions (NOx, particles). The CFD model will be used to explore engine operating limits in relation to the hydrogen injection configuration and settings. Parameters like injector orientation, nozzle geometry, injection pressure, injection timing and duration will be addressed. It is anticipated that a CFD SI H2-ICE (single-cylinder) model with conventional fuelling system (no Direct Injection) is available in CONVERGE CFD simulation environment as a starting point.
For this project the following activities are foreseen:
- Literature study on Hydrogen combustion;
- Create CFD simulation setup of the research engine including Direct Injection of hydrogen;
- Realize geometry and boundary conditions;
- Setup basic combustion model for testing;
- Study parameter variations on engine performance;
- Write master thesis report and present main findings.

- Experience with computational tools: any CFD code, Matlab®.
