What will you be doing?

The combustion of fossil fuels results in gas streams consisting mainly of N2, ~15% CO2, H2O and small amounts of CO, NOx and SOx. Significant interest is being currently placed in developing efficient carbon-capture technologies to separate CO2 from flue gas. In addition, CO and CO2 are important building blocks for the synthesis of organic chemicals and its separation from gas mixtures is complicated employing conventional separation techniques. Supercapacitive swing adsorption (SSA) is a recently discovered phenomenon. Similarly to the process in capacitive deionization (CDI) of water streams, selective and reversible adsorption and desorption of CO2 is carried out upon charging and discharging a supercapacitor exposed to the gas stream. At TNO we are developing new electrode/electrolyte compositions in order to bring SSA technology closer to a commercial stage. This internship provides an exciting opportunity to address the challenges associated with carbon capture and utilization. You will be using (electro)chemical/electroanalytical methods and synthesis to investigate novel components for use in SSA.

What do we require of you?

You are an enthusiastic master student looking for an internship of 6-9 months. You have a chemical engineering, chemistry or material science/engineering background and you are eager to learn about electrochemistry and electrochemical methods. You are pro-active and independent with good communication skills in English. You will be working with a diverse team of scientists/engineering/technicians with a wide variety of expertise to make up for a great learning experience.
Among others, your main tasks will be:
  • Explore potential materials and compositions leading to enhanced gas adsorption.
  • Perform electrode fabrication, electrochemical cell preparation, characterization and analysis.
  • Participate in group meetings, provide feed-back, discuss results, and propose solutions.

You will be living in Noord-Holland area with breath-takingly beautiful sceneries and living environment. The area, well-known for its sandy beaches in Petten and Bergen, provides a quiet and most beautiful environment for outdoor activities (boating/sailing, swimming, biking, etc.) with easy access to the nearby larger cities such as Amsterdam and Alkmaar.
