What will you be doing?

Person reidentification is relevant in the camera-surveillance domain to answer the questions:
‘Where did a person come from?’ and ‘Where did he go to?’. Current state-of-the-art research shows that the deep-learning based neural networks reach superior performance compared to other methods. However, when they are optimized for one dataset, they cannot easily be used on another dataset. This hinders the practical usability of these methods. Recent progress shows several methods that can work on more than one dataset, and there is knowledge available about
fine-tuning and transferring a network from one domain to another, but this field is not mature yet.

The main challenge of this project will be to investigate what is needed to transfer a neural network from one dataset to another dataset and reach good performance on the other dataset.

You will do a review of state-of-the-art papers, implement an existing method, make modifications to improve the existing solutions, perform experiments to estimate the performance and document the method and results.

The Intelligent Imaging research group is a young, passionate and creative group of professionals (40 people) specialized in the development of groundbreaking applications in the fields of computer vision and deep learning. One third of the group has started working for us in the past two years.

What do we require of you?

You are in the final stages of your degree in artificial intelligence, computer science, physics, mathematics, electrical engineering or a similar degree and have some track record in the field of computer vision. You have experience in programming in Python, you are pragmatic and focused on making things work. Next to technical expertise we value communication skills and a clientoriented, results-driven attitude to add value to our clients and the Dutch society as a whole.

What can you expect of your work situation?

TNO is an independent research organisation whose expertise and research make an important contribution to the competitiveness of companies and organisations, to the economy and to the quality of society as a whole. Innovation with purpose is what TNO stands for. With 3000 people we develop knowledge not for its own sake but for practical application. To create new products that make life more pleasant and valuable and help companies innovate. To find creative answers to the questions posed by society. We work for a variety of customers: governments, the SME sector, large companies, service providers and non-governmental organisations. Working together on new knowledge, better products and clear recommendations for policy and processes. In everything we do, impact is the key. Our product and process innovations and recommendations are only worth something if our customers can use them to boost their competitiveness.

What can TNO offer you?

You want to work on the precursor of your career; a work placement gives you an opportunity to take a good look at your prospective future employer. TNO goes a step further. It’s not just looking that interests us; you and your knowledge are essential to our innovation. That’s why we attach a great deal of value to your personal and professional development. You will, of course, be properly supervised during your work placement and be given the scope for you to get the best out of yourself. Naturally, we provide suitable work placement compensation.

Application process

You can start your internship at any moment from September 2019 onwards, for a period of at least 4 months. However, for our vacancies it is required that, before you can start the internship, the AIVD issues a security clearance after conducting a security screening. This process may take up to 8 weeks. If you have been abroad for more than 3 consecutive months in the past 5 years, or if you do not have the Dutch nationality, the process may take longer. In most of these cases you can start after 3-4 months. For more information, please visit the AIVD website. Please mention in your application the length of your project and the desired starting date. You will receive an appropriate internship fee.
