What will you be doing?

Introduction:
The ISO 26262 standard is the automotive norm for functional safety. Compliance to this standard ensures achieving functional safety in both product and process aspects. At IVS, we are developing a ground-breaking technology based on model-based software technologies that ensure compliance with ISO 26262. The technology relies on a conceptual model of the standard and checking project models against this conceptual model through constraint checking. 
Creating the conceptual model of the standard is a difficult task. It requires experience in modeling, expertise on the subject of the standard, and takes a significant amount of effort to accomplish the model and validate it. Figure 1 shows an overview of the process of conceptual modeling. In this process, the text of the ISO standard is processed, parsed, analyzed, and modeled to create the domain or conceptual model. In the second step of this process, the sentences of the original text are restructured and analyzed to capture the candidate phrases for modeling. 

Objectives:
At IVS, we are developing a software tool called Multidomain Modelling Assist (MMA). This tool has a plug-in in the word and guides the modeler through the process. Currently, all the steps and activities for modeling are currently performed manually in this tool. We are looking for enhancing the MMA tool, by adding a feature that provides suggestions to the modeler regarding the candidate elements. These suggestions should be created by natural language processing techniques and can benefit from preselected keywords. The assignment includes the following tasks:
  1. Literature review on the natural language processing techniques. 
  2. Feasibility study on the extent of the capability of NLP.
  3. Designing a concept for extending the MMA tool with Element Suggestion Feature.
  4. Identify the required functionalities of such a feature.

In case of successful completion of this internship assignment, there are strong possibilities to extend towards an MSc graduation assignment, in which the tool may be used for modeling the Sofware Compliance according to ISO 26262. 

What do we require of you?

  • Self-motivated and proactive student MSc level in the field of computer science or similar.
  • Ability to think in conceptual level and experience for connecting concepts to engineering artifacts.
  • Eager to work in a dynamic research environment.
  • Background in software and safety is preferred.
