The Machinaide project is a cooperation of TNO and Cordis Automation, Additive Industries, Lely Industries, TU/e and KE-works. The project addresses data-driven techniques and knowledge-based services for and optimisation of logistic systems as they exist in different domains. To achieve this goal, Machinaide aims at the development of digital twins of these logistic systems.

What will be your role?

Logistic systems, such as manufacturing plants, distribution centres and agricultural system, have a huge number of configurations. A system designer needs to find a configuration that gives a good trade-off of multiple (conflicting) criteria. This design space exploration involves the evaluation and comparison of promising design alternatives. Simulation is a common approach to this evaluation.

This assignment focuses on the simulation of logistic systems using Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) for transportation and/or operation. The goal is to derive a simulation approach that (1) is fast enough to analyse many design alternatives, and (2) supports the high degree of customisation required for AGV-based systems.

For the latter, the simulation should support the following types of customisation: (1) Configuration (topology of the logistic system, travel paths of the AGVs, sensors of the AGVs), (2) Behaviour (AGV-environment interaction, AGV motion/travel, AGV battery management, AGV collision avoidance), and (3) Optimisation (Optimisation metrics (KPIs)).

The assignment is to be demonstrated on agricultural systems with several AGVs with different capabilities. The assignment will (if circumstances allow this) be carried out at a TNO location in Eindhoven in cooperation with Lely Industries.

What we expect from you

You are a Mathematics, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, or Industrial Engineering MSc student looking for a graduation assignment of 6-9 months. You have experience with modelling, software development and preferably domain-specific modelling and languages. You are positively challenged by a multi-disciplinary environment and are motivated to have your graduation assignment make scientific system development methods accessible to a broader audience.
