What will you be doing?

Your internship will be part of the Project Detection Surface Damage (Detectie Oppervlakte Schade, DOS). In this project, in collaboration with Rijkswaterstaat, research is performed to (further) automate the (state) inspections of roads. This automation enables Rijkswaterstaat to perform road maintenance on a reliable, safe and cost-effective basis. Yearly detailed 3D height profiles are obtained from the entire Dutch national road network, which assesses, among other things, raveling, cracking and evenness.

One crucial step in automated inspections of pavements is the automatic recognition and classification of the pavement type. This recognition is performed on high resolution 3D data acquired yearly of the entire Dutch highway network. Several challenges in the classification of pavement type are still to be solved. During your internship you will be exploring the possibilities of improved classification accuracy using Machine Learning / Deep Learning.

Your internship (preferably a MSc project) would ideally start in 2019 for a period of 9 months. You will preferably join the Intelligent Imaging research group in The Hague.

What do we require of you?

You are in the final stages of your degree in artificial intelligence, computer science, physics, mathematics, electrical engineering or a similar degree and have some track record in the field of computer vision. You have knowledge or interest in Deep Learning, Machine Learning and/or Image Analysis, knowledge of Matlab and/or Python is a pro. You are pragmatic and focused on making things work. Next to technical expertise we value communication skills and a client-oriented, results-driven attitude to add value to our clients and the Dutch society as a whole.

Application process

For our vacancies it is required that, before you can start the internship, the AIVD issues a security clearance after conducting a security screening. This process may take up to 8 weeks. If you have been abroad for more than 3 consecutive months in the past 5 years, or if you do not have the Dutch nationality, the process may take longer.
