What will you be doing?

Problem definition:
TNO develops software which can take over the controls of a vehicle. It is important that when this software is installed into a vehicle that the vehicle behaves in a controlled manner. It can be very dangerous for the driver, passengers and people around the vehicle if the vehicle misbehaves. Therefor we ensure that this software is tested thoroughly before we take it to the test track. One of the ways we do this is by means of a Hardware In the Loop (HIL) and Software In the Loop (SIL) setup. In these setups the surroundings of the car and the car with all its sensors are simulated in a virtual environment. In this way we can validate behaviour of the software and execute tests without risks. Nowadays the number tests that we have to perform is increasing.

The objective is to automate a part of this testing process. We can run these tests by manually installing and running the programs. We want to automate the execution of tests so that we can continuously ensure our software quality. This will need some clever solution on how to generate the test itself and collect the results in a sensible manner. The test results need to be fed back into the safety cycle of our product development.

  • understand the HIL/SIL setup;
  • understand the scenario based testing; 
  • creating a continuous integration pipeline for the SIL;
  • design and implement a smart manner of collecting results from the tests in SIL and HIL;
  • document findings.

  • creating an automated manner of running the test cases;
  • implementing a manner in which test results can be extracted from the SIL and HIL setups.

What do we require of you?

  • proficient English communication;
  • creative, pro-active and result minded;
  • knowledge on testing and continuous integration;
  • experience with C++ or python is recommended;
  • experience with Docker, Gazebo , ROS is a plus.

The Integrated Vehicle Safety (IVS) department of TNO is actively pursuing innovative technologies, methodologies, and tools that contribute to cooperative and automated driving. This department has been leading the automated driving program of TNO. At IVS, we research the latest methods regarding functional safety and apply them to smart mobility and automated driving. We work on both European and customer projects on various safety-critical applications such as platooning, valet parking, autopilot. We have a wide range of expertise regarding automotive ranging from control, software, human factors, assessment, and safety.
