What will you be doing?
We are looking for a student to work with us on one or more research projects studying driver behavior when driving with (semi-) automated vehicles. This means that you will be working with a database consisting of video data and behavioral data (i.e. driving speed, following distance, brake performance etc) of people driving in (semi-)automated vehicles, with and without the automation active. This is a MYSQL database. The extracts from this database need to be statistically analyed with the help of either SPSS, Statistica, R or Matlab. Depending on the focus of your research, the work may involve annotation of the video footage (e.g. to assess secondary tasks a driver may engage in). We offer the possibility to set up your own research questions to study and write your thesis based on this research. But you can also join our researchers for your work experience without combining it with a thesis.
What do we require of you?
You are doing a study in cognitive psychology, psychology and technology or comparable. Or a more technical study (e.g. mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, aerospace engineering…) if that also involves a human factors research component
We require that you have experience with studying human behavior, statistical analysis and setting up experimental studies. We see experience with databases such as MySQL as a benefit. We like you to start as soon as possible. Our TNO department is located at the Automotive Campus in Helmond, but if necessary we can be flexible with regard to working location. In agreement with the supervisor, working parttime is also possible and the starting date can also be changed.
What can you expect of your work situation?
You will work at the Integrated Vehicle Safety department of TNO on the Automotive Campus in Helmond. In this department people are working on developing automated driving vehicles and studying the effects with regard to traffic safety and human behavior. The people are young, enthusiastic and driven. You will work in an open area, within your own team. One of our employees will be your mentor. He/she will help you to get acquainted with the department and give you guidelines for your research in order to help you to get the best out of it.
What can TNO offer you?
You want to work on the precursor of your career, an internship provides you with the opportunity to take a good look at your prospective future employer. TNO also goes a step further. It’s not just looking that interests us, you and your knowledge are essential to our innovation. That’s why we attach a great deal of value to your personal and professional development. You will, of course, be properly supervised during your internship, and be given the scope for you to exceed yourself and your expectations. We also provide suitable compensation for internships.
