What will you be doing?

Next to dyslipidemia, inflammation plays an important role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and its complications (myocardial infarction (MI), ischemic stroke, and peripheral artery disease).  In the last 3 decades numerous successful therapies have been developed for intensive lowering of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C).  Experimental and clinical data suggest that reducing inflammation without affecting lipid levels may also reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Among cytokines that mediate inflammation, the interleukin-1 (IL-1) family of proteins, which includes the IL-1β protein, emerges as a leading target for anti-inflammatory therapy. In the current study the effect of an anti-mouse IL-1β antibody on atherosclerosis development will be investigated in a translational mouse model, the APOE*3Leiden(CETP) mouse, under mild and pro-inflammatory conditions.
The internship will involve mouse handling, body weight and food intake measurements, blood sampling, subcutaneous injections, necropsy including collection heart, liver, aortic arch, biochemical measurements (plasma lipids, inflammation markers) and histological and IHC measurements to measure atherosclerosis development (area, severity, plaque composition) in the aortic root.
The duration of this internship is at least 6 months and it preferably starts in February.
