What will you be doing?
The contribution of the renewable energy sources in the total energy generation is steadily rising.
One of the issues of the renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind, is intermittency, therefore electricity price variation. Cheap electricity improves business case for electrochemical production of chemicals as they usually require significant energy input to facilitate chemical conversion. Additionally electrochemical conversion for production of chemical offers significant advantages over conventional thermochemical processes:
- ambient process conditions;
- water as a solvent;
- minimal resources, the electrons drive the conversion;
- minimal or no waste produced;
- selective conversion.
Currently TNO investigation various electrochemical conversion processes such as:
- electrochemical reduction of CO2;
- production of H2O2;
- production of various bio-based monomers.
During your internship you will investigate into an electrochemical production of biobased chemicals (1-2 cases).
You will screen various reaction conditions (pH, temperature, electrolyte, electrode materials) and study the effect on the reaction kinetics. With guidance, you will propose solutions
how to optimize such conversion process, work with experienced process engineers and electrochemists and contribute to the process design and optimization (conversion, yield, energy consumption).
The project includes:
1. Literature study;
2. Kinetics study and optimization of the electrochemical conversion process (Voltammetry studies,
3. Optimization of the reaction performance.
The work is ~80% experimental.
Duration: 4 months.
What do we require of you?
We're looking for a HBO student or a master student in the last phase of his Master in chemistry or chemical engineering. Experience working in a laboratory is a plus. The important thing is your motivation to optimize the electrochemical processes we investigate through experimental investigations.
