What will you be doing?

The modern society demands its professional workers to be flexible and to cope successfully with the disruptive developments that occur at an ever increasing rate, such as the introduction of advanced technology, organizational changes, globalization, international cooperation, and so on. In order for people to respond in an effective and resilient manner to such developments, they need training that enables them to learn in a manner that fits their personal needs, capabilities, and preferences. This probably explains the growing body of research on adaptive and personalized forms of learning. Personalized learning refers to the customization of learning material, instructional support, and learning trajectory in response to the characteristics, needs, and behaviors of individual learners. Facilitated by technological advancements, various applications have been developed to support personalized learning environment. There is, however, a need to document the effects of personalization of learning; not only the effects on quality and speed of learning, but also on the motivation and engagement of the learner.

TNO has recently developed a remake of the classic "Space Fortress" game, a game especially designed to study the acquisition of skill. In this game, the player's task is to control a spaceship, and to destroy an enemy space fortress. The game is complex, and demands ample practice to master. It requires the coordinated and simultaneous execution of different competencies, like e.g., perceptual-motor skills, procedural skills, attention, planning, and memory skills. This game will be used for the research, that involves designing an appropriate method of personalising the learning process, and to investigate its effects in an experimental fashion. The precise research question will be determined in collaboration with the thesis-student.

What do we require of you?

The student will be involved in the following activities:
  • participate in the TNO-project team "Personalised Learning";
  • perform literature review on the topic of personalized learning;
  • formulating research question(s) and designing a research method;
  • organizing and managing the execution and the data of the study;
  • conducting statistical analysis to address the research questions;
  • writing a master-thesis.
