What will you be doing?
The contribution of renewable energy (RE) to total electricity generation is steadily rising. With electricity market penetration, green electricity will become increasingly business viable for use in the electrochemical conversion of water, carbon dioxide and biomass platform molecules as a basis for production of a wide range of chemicals and fuels. However, these conversions require a significant energy input and thus the combination of catalysis and electrons (i.e. electrochemistry) may offer a number of advantages (as compared to thermochemical routes):
- Less demanding process conditions
- Chemistry driven by electrons from RE
- Reduced ecological
- Minimal or no waste produced
- Improved selectivity to desired products
With the aim of improving process performance, further R&D on so-called gas diffusion electrodes (GDEs) is required to assist in establishing a better understanding of the gas-liquid-catalyst interface. As GDEs are responsible for supporting the electrocatalyst and simultaneously for the distribution of gas, liquid and current, it is necessary to optimize form, chemistry and properties such that production rates, current densities and faraday efficiencies can be increased and in turn render process economics increasing more attractive.
What do we require of you?
We're looking for a master's student in the last phase of their Master in chemistry, chemical engineering and/or materials science related programmes. Experience working in a laboratory is mandatory whilst experience of performing electrochemical measurements is a plus. We are looking for candidates with strong motivation for the project and the desire to engage, learn and develop skills regarding innovative material synthesis and application in a topical field through experimental investigations.
Project Duration: 6-10 months.

This project is a collaboration between the catalysis team, in the department Materials Solutions at TNO and the Membrane Materials and Processes group in Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry, at Eindhoven University of Technology. As an intern at TNO working on nanoscale materials, you will further develop technical skills but also get a flavor of complexity in interdisciplinary projects, where different disciplines merge.
