What will you be doing?
Are you looking for an internship or for a graduation project? The department of Structural Dynamics in TNO is always looking for students that like to combine innovation with technology.
The goal of the department Structural Dynamics is to help customers improve the reliability, safety, performance and life of structures. Due to the many natural occurrences of dynamics in structures projects and customers are very diverse, including maritime, offshore and onshore structures. Challenges that arise in these areas are tackled using solutions from theory and numerical simulations in combination with experiments in our multi-purpose laboratory or in the real world.
You will follow in a long line of students that graduated or did their internship in our department on challenging subjects like raking damage in ships, earthquake damage in masonry structures, additive manufacturing of ship sections and many more. Graduation projects are combined with real world demand for smart solutions, which enables the use of experiments and real world data. Does this excite you and would you like to research topical challenges with a lot of freedom and puzzling in an inspiring environment? Look no further and apply here!
Concrete research topics include:
- Ship- and vehicle resilience; (under water) explosions, projectile damage, collisions, IED's, composite materials and jumping behavior of vehicles.
- Materials; fracture mechanics, failure modelling, composites and other materials in extreme conditions (cryogenic temperatures, extreme load cases etc.).
- Simulations; impact, advanced FE models, new modelling solutions like projective dynamics and PUFEM.
While there are often enough assignments available linked to current projects, you are also encouraged to come up with your own ideas on anything structural dynamics.
What do we require of you?
A (graduate) student in TNO is looking for innovative ways of solving problems, in a way that is independent but also in collaboration with employees. Performing experiments and theoretical research at TNO requires planning, ambition and perseverance. A matching student therefore has:
- An active enrollment in an HBO or Master program Maritime, Civil, Aerospace, Materials or Mechanical engineering.
- A strong theoretical background and affinity with coordinating experiments.
- A go-getter mentality as well as a creative mind.
- Good communication and collaboration skills.
