What will you be doing?
The increasing popularity of Internet-Protocol (IP) based services has accelerated the evolution of consumer’s home networks. This led to growing number of devices for use in a home, and as the result, a home network became a complex environment providing connectivity to number of devices with different capabilities and with different communication interfaces.
Any given home may now have one or more PCs, laptops, smartphones, tablets, Internet radio devices, set-top-boxes, network-attached storage devices, digital photo frames, game consoles, Internet phones, and printer servers, all interconnected via a combination of Ethernet switches, WiFi access points, power line bridges, and cordless telephony base stations.
These devices are often networked with each other in various ways, and connected to the managed operator network and the Internet via one or more Home Gateways (HGs)..Our scope is network topology discovery at home, thus limiting types of devices that can be found here. Examples include Residential Gateway (RG), Set-top Box (STB), Network Access Storage (NAS), …
Topology is defined as a list of active devices and their capabilities, a list of connections between devices, and on a per-connection base the link technology that is used. Note that device can have multiple communication interfaces, and also that communication link’s performance is not necessary the same in both directions (from node A to node B and vice versa).
We now aim at deepening our understanding of mechanisms for establishing home network link performance , and have to tackle the following challenges:
- Analysis of existing link performance mechanisms, including their limitations;
- Creation of methods to provide accurate and timely information on link performances in home network;
- Implementing and proving that chosen method can provide accurate and timely information on link performance.
Within this context, we are looking for candidates to graduate with us. Currently we have space for one final-year master student to work on the home network topology and discovery.
What do we require of you?
Top students are invited to apply. You need to have a good knowledge of Computer Networking, topology discovery protocol, and data analysis. Your practical and communication skills will be greatly involved in case we decide to extend our measurement campaign taking place at people’s homes.
