Clean air is literally of vital importance. But unfortunately, air pollution is the fourth factor causing most premature deaths in the Netherlands – worse than diabetes or overweight. About 11,000 people die prematurely each year due to air pollution, reducing the Netherlands's average life expectancy by about nine months. The quality of the air varies to a great extent per place and even within cities. Monitoring at sufficient temporal and spatial scales is therefore of great importance. Electrochemical sensors provide an increasingly important role in this domain. A patented measurement system was developed by TNO that allows continuous measurement of NO2 by an electrochemical sensor.
