Anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions are strongly contributing to the warming of the planet. One potential method of decreasing these emissions is carbon capture and utilization (CCU). At TNO, we are developing novel CCU routes to produce CO2 neutral fuels and chemicals for the future. In this project, you will help in the development of a process which converts captured CO2 into formic acid in an innovative manner.

What will be your role?

You will be working in the lab to test various chemical compositions and methods to capture and convert CO2 into formic acid, as well as separating the product into a useful purity for subsequent applications.

The work will be done in collaboration with the Synthetic Fuels team, a small sub-team of the Gas Treatment team within the Sustainable Process and Energy Systems department of TNO. We are a young, enthusiastic team developing various CCU technologies in large EU projects as well as small internal conceptual developments.

Translating a concept into reality requires creative problem solving, out-of-the-box thinking as well as a good understanding of chemical molecular interactions such as acid-base bonding, polarity and related separation methods. It is important to be able to work independently as well as feel comfortable to have technical discussions with the team whenever there are results or difficulties.
