What will be your role?
The developments on communication are following up in a rapid pace. Apart from the amount of data the network coverage gets increasingly important. High bandwidth satellite communication is essential to transfer for example satellite sensor data and offer (internet) coverage to remote areas. Conventional RF-bands such as 4G and 5G are highly regulated and limited in throughput. Laser communication offers, similar to glass fibers, a much higher bandwidth. Within the department of Optomechatronics we design and build ground, air and space terminals for a variety of use cases. One of the challenges of free space links is the impact of weather conditions and turbulence in particular. Therefore accurate modelling of turbulence and the impact on an optical link is key in the design of optical communication terminals.
Details of the assignment will vary on an case by case basis. As an example:
You will be involved in verifying the existing turbulence model with experimental data gathered in previous ground-to-ground tests. Based on your background you could either focus on the physics, the control or the impact on the optical link. If the opportunity arises, you will assist us in setting up and performing future ground-to-ground tests.
The turbulence model is used in several different projects based on which the design of the terminals are being developed. Based on your background and interest you could be coupled to a specific project.

What we expect from you
We are looking for a intern or graduation student with the following profile:
- Master student in Engineering (Aerospace, Physics, Mechanical or equivalent) with an affinity to data processing, physics, optics and (turbulence) modelling;
- Language: English required, Dutch optional;
- Distinguishing between relevant and irrelevant literature;
- Analyze the results and present them in a comprehensive manner;
- Experience with Matlab and/or Python;
- Understanding of data processing methodology in temporal and frequency domain.
