What will you be doing?

An explosion or collision of ships in an industrial area like Rotterdam harbor can lead to casualties, destroyed buildings, failing infrastructure, chaos, and -possibly toxic- air pollution. Information about the dynamic situation is incomplete, and sometimes uncertain, affecting task planning and performance continuously. Advancing the situational awareness of fire fighters will improve safety and performance. In the ASSISTANCE project (, the goal is to help fire fighters by developing a platform where data from various sources (e.g. unmanned platforms, wearable sensors) will be integrated in order to inform FRs on potential hazardous situations. The system prototype will be evaluated with fire fighters.

Topics are, depending on your background and interest: 
  • During an incident, a (toxic) fluid may be leaking, e.g. the Deepwater oil spill in 2020: how much is released, and at what rate, are two of the most important factors to determine its effect. And, depending on the spill, how fast is the source moving. Use AI and machine learning to determine the size of the source (surface area or volume) and release rate (volume/sec).
  • Determining a danger zone based on model output for the predicted gas cloud, including highlighting vulnerable places such as hospitals on the map, and calculating the expected number of people.
  • Modelling and implementing a warning system for the first responders about approaching the danger zone (output of the gas cloud prediction model), in all phases of the emergency.
  • Determining optimal locations for the (mobile) sensors to validate model outcomes.
In this internship, we welcome input and ideas on possible topics that fit the general description.

What do we require of you?

You are a smart and enthousiast student, in the field of AI, data science or Software development, who would like to work in an international project. You have a background in applied science or AI and some experience in programming, experimenting or statistics is welcome. Furthermore, you are pragmatic, resourceful and social, and you like to work in a challenging and socially relevant project.
