Optical fiber devices are used in many optical experiments, technology demonstration, and advanced instruments. Coupling light from free space to optical fibers is important for many applications, such as, quantum technology (single-photon collection) or biophotonics (in vivo imaging). However the light in-coupling efficiency for common step-index fiber drops quickly when the angle of incidence increases. In this project, we will explore various strategies aiming to improve the coupling efficiency by the fiber tip especially at large angle of incidence.

What will be your role?

Modified fiber tip using diffractive nano-structures presents a promising solution. When light impinges on diffractive structure also known as meta-surface, diffraction wave is generated. The nano-structure can be designed such that the diffraction wave matches with the guided mode of the optical fiber. In this project, we will study several diffractive nano-structures together with the light in-coupling in optical fiber. Numerical simulation will be used to model the light interaction, diffraction and guided propagation effects. For each studied nano-structure, we will also investigate the manufacture methods.
In a short introductory period, you will learn the basic principles of in-coupling efficiency in optical fiber. Through the project you will:
  • Perform a literature review on the modified fiber tip for light in-coupling in optical fiber;
  • Develop a numerical model to study the modified fiber tip with nano-structure;
  • Design of diffractive nano-structure;
  • Work in an multidisciplinary team;
  • Report on research findings.
