Internship | Modified fiber tip to improve light in-coupling efficiency from various light sources

Optical fiber devices are used in many optical experiments, technology demonstration, and advanced instruments. Coupling light from free space to optical fibers is important for many applications, such as, quantum technology (single-photon collection) or biophotonics (in vivo imaging). However the light in-coupling efficiency for common step-index fiber drops quickly when the angle of incidence increases. In this project, we will explore various strategies aiming to improve the coupling efficiency by the fiber tip especially at large angle of incidence.
What will be your role?
In a short introductory period, you will learn the basic principles of in-coupling efficiency in optical fiber. Through the project you will:
- Perform a literature review on the modified fiber tip for light in-coupling in optical fiber;
- Develop a numerical model to study the modified fiber tip with nano-structure;
- Design of diffractive nano-structure;
- Work in an multidisciplinary team;
- Report on research findings.

- Master level study on physics;
- Knowledge on optics preferably;
- Experience in computation tools and languages such as, Matlab / Python.
