TNO is leading the implementation of a Geothermal Atlas of Africa (GAA) in the LEAP-RE | Europe-Africa Partnership for Renewable Energy (, that started in 2021 and runs for 3 years. LEAP-RE is a huge collaborative project with close to 90 partners from Europe and Africa. The project is focusing on the development of the use of renewable energy in many disciplines with implementation in Africa.

What will be your role?

The GAA is developed jointly with Utrecht University and 10-15 European and African partners involved, based on an inventory of all (publicly available) geothermally relevant existing data (geological, geophysical, geochemical, etc), and to collect, quality-check and to publish the data, or the meta-data, in a public online database. As part of the joint activities TNO and UU will perform a comprehensive compilation and develop a methodology to assess the geothermal potential of sedimentary basins for direct heat use in Africa. For this activity we seek a MSc student for a research internship of 6 months. Activities include literature study and data compilation, extension and enhancement of existing methods for geothermal resources characterization and resource assessment.
