Internship | Optimization for Urban Electric Commercial Freight Vehicles and their Infrastructure

The challenge of this internship is to research the optimization approaches for electric trucks, considering the full lifetime of the vehicle as well as the trade-off between the vehicle and its charging infrastructure.

What will you be doing?

You should be familiar with electric vehicles, charging, and optimisation and simulation aspects. 

In this challenging internship, it is your task to implement a set of possible configurations in simulation, and evaluate their impact on energy/cost savings via a simplified simulation model. Models will be provided to you (electric truck), and optimisation tools, although you will be responsible for the implementation and analysis. To avoid the complex task to developing control, you may utilise Dynamic Programming or PSO methods supplied to you in the form of a toolbox. Your work will consider co-design of the infrastructure and charge control system (normally vehicle-centric). You will not be required to model the grid, with the focus on demand and demand optimisation against fixed grid constraints.

Examples of required activities may include, but are not limited to:
  • Analysis of the vehicle performance using existing or tested data/models
  • Modelling and analysis developed in Matlab/Simulink
  • Model integration for the various configurations, numerical test and validation (where applicable)
  • Modelling the context of the application including sizing of components

What do we require of you?

  • You have a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, for example automotive engineering, systems and control, electrical engineering.
  • You are coursing a master in a relevant field, for example automotive engineering, systems and control, electrical engineering
  • Knowledge in Matlab/Simulink
  • You enjoy developing innovative solutions to technically challenging problems and have the right mix of intellectual curiosity and pragmatism.

We have developed our own extensive modelling and simulation tools to simulate both conventional, hybrid electric, and fully electric powertrains. The group has its own state-of-the-art testing facilities, where we can measure complete powertrain systems for real world emissions and fuel efficiency. We can perform measurements on an entire vehicle (up to truck size) in our unique altitude climate chamber, and perform on-road measurements, as well as battery testing facilities.
