What will you be doing?

The energy transition from fossil fuels to renewable materials, based on solar, wind and biomass sources, offers new opportunities for many industrial sectors and will help to make the chemical industry more sustainable by using building blocks, such as water, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and biobased platform molecules, for making chemicals and fuel. Electrochemistry will be central to the approach to convert electrons to building blocks and to store electricity in the form of “electrofuels”, as well as to use electricity to make “electrochemicals”. Therefore, efficient electrochemical energy conversion and production of fuels and chemicals are important technologies for the future of sustainable energy.

In laboratory scale electrochemical cell, you will perform organic electrosynthesis in aqueous and non-aqueous solvent in using different type of cell in order to convert building blocks (CO, CO2¸ NH3, etc…) into chemicals. You will work on different experimental condition in order to reach high selectivity towards the target product. Moreover you will learn and apply analytical techniques such as gas chromatography, high performance liquid chromatography, near infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance.

  • To have at least basic knowledge in organic chemistry and / or electrochemistry;
  • To have enthusiasm and motivation to work with organic synthesis combined with electrochemistry;
  • To be able to look into details;
  • To be able to learn and further setup measurements;
  • To be dynamic, self-confident and interested in your research;
  • To be flexible, proactive, responsible and easy person;
  • To be safety conscious and accurate.

What can you expect of your work situation?

During the period of the internship you will experience working in a very dynamic TNO team of chemists and engineers. Besides the optimization of the electrochemical reaction you will learn and apply analytical techniques such as gas chromatography, high performance liquid chromatography, near infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance. You will also learn to organize and communicate the results of your work to an audience of scientists.
The result of your internship will be disseminated in the form of scientific publication and conferences.
