Carbon capture is the process of capturing waste CO2 from industrial point sources like power plants. CO2 can be separated from flue gases of point sources with absorption technology. Various solvents can be used for absorption including amines. Over time these solvents are observed to degrade thereby resulting in solvent loss and economic impact on the process. The degradation occurs in the presence of O2, CO2, NOx and SOx species. Oxidative degradation due to the presence of O2 in the flue gas is a dominant degradation mechanism.
