What will you be doing?
It’s becoming widely acknowledged that automated cooperative vehicles ((C)ACC) are a possible solution to improve the quality of on-road travelling by reducing traffic jams, increasing the throughput and by reducing vehicle emissions. To deal safely with complex on-road situations, prediction models are built to foresee the motions of other road users. Having such predicted information and AI based prediction models, it will bring further the challenge of interacting and planning the platoon manoeuvres optimally.
The focus of this research project on developing a cooperative manoeuvering and control concept (for a platoon of vehicles) that can contain the foreseen motions of non-communicative road users in complex on-road situations. To give an advice to TNO on how to do this, your assignment is to research available methods, select promising options and benchmark them into a simulation environment. The following steps should be followed:
- Literature review, overview of methods for cooperative maneuvering of a platoon and how prediction models can be included in their control and decision making
- Design cooperative manoeuvering and control concept in face of predicted uncertainty (based on a set of use cases). Demonstrate and analyse the results in terms of safety, performance and comfort.
- Report and final presentation, preferably in short article format.
What do we require of you?
- good communication in English;
- pro-active and a creative mind;
- experience in Matlab, Simulink or similar;
- eager to solve complex problems and to dive into details;
- research oriented.
What can you expect of your work situation?
The Integrated Vehicle Safety (IVS) department of TNO is actively pursuing innovative technologies, methodologies, and tools that contribute to cooperative and automated driving. This department has been leading the automated driving program of TNO. At IVS, we research the latest methods regarding functional safety and apply them to smart mobility and automated driving. We work on both European and customer projects on various safety-critical applications such as platooning, valet parking and autopilot. We have a wide range of expertise regarding automotive ranging from control, software, human factors, assessment, and safety.
