What will you be doing?

Nowadays companies are collecting more and more data about their high-level processes and production machines. The purpose is to get real-time insights into the company’s overall performance, production process, supply chain status, etc. In manufacturing companies the production process often does not follow the high-level process linearly, due to various reasons. To improve existing processes, it’s essential that the high-level process can be compared with the real production process. Extracting/discovering (business) processes based on event-log data can be done with a technique called process mining. The challenge lies in applying this technique on a stream of continuous data from many machines with varying data models, and potentially matching this with a high-level process definition.

The goal of this assignment is to extract the real production process from machine data and visualize this in an understandable manner. Your project will start with collecting data at one of our customers using our internal framework. Next you need to pre-process the data and get a basic understanding of the domain. Using this knowledge you will design and integrate a process mining algorithm, and test it on the obtained data. Next it should be possible to compare the mined process to the high-level plan of the production. To enhance the comparison, it should be possible to manipulate the extracted model manually, e.g. combine sub-process into one.
 

What do we require of you?

We are looking for someone who enjoys solving real-life problems with software. The ideal candidate(s) like digging into large data sets, learning new programming languages, building cloud software and getting it production ready.

We, at Monitoring & Control Services (MCS) prove the feasibility as well as the added value of innovative applications of information technology for industry and government through an approach of first-time engineering of large scale monitoring & control systems. We view such systems from an Internet-of-Things perspective, where large amounts of heterogeneous data are generated by internet-connected infrastructures. These data need to be stored, processed and analyzed to build useable information for decision-making or autonomous control.
Our research group deals with the information technology challenges involved in:
1.Automatic acquisition, storage and retrieval of large volumes of data across organizations.
2.The continuous processing of large distributed sets of data into information using adaptive (machine-learning) algorithms from multiple parties involved in Big Data analysis.
3.Predictive analytics and large scale simulation of complex model chains for decision support in different phases (from planning/design to maintenance) of the innovation cycle.
4.Humans interacting with the processing of data into information within complex systems.
By developing future-proof, adaptable and scalable IT solutions, we cooperate with government bodies, enterprises, service providers and non-governmental organizations in three focus domains - Industry & Infrastructure, Sustainable Energy, and Defense to create a more efficient, greener and safer tomorrow.
We are a fun and very social group of applied researchers, consultants in IT systems and processes, as well as a number of System Integration experts, located in Groningen and the Hague.
