What will you be doing?

Within the Technology cluster Risk Assessment and Toxicology (TC RATO), we are addressing the hazard and risk assessment of chemicals and nanomaterials. In addition, we develop and use bioinformatics and in silico approaches together with toxicological knowledge to e.g.: support chemical grouping towards toxicological endpoints; model adverse outcome pathways; and predict the safety of new chemicals and of new drug targets. Also, we participate in various research programs on alternatives to animal testing and the exposome. The exposome is a new concept within risk assessment and is defined as all exposures (external and internal) from a person from conception until death. The exposome, encompasses all non-genetic risk factors experienced during a person’s life (external exposome) and its relation to biological exposure and responses inside the human body (internal exposome). Within TC RATO, we focus on the application of the internal exposome primarily within the occupational setting, to reduce occupational exposures and diseases/adverse health effects.

To support our activities, we are continuously looking for students interested in an internship for:
  • New approach methodologies for hazard and risk assessment to replace animal tests.
  • Adopting novel data types (omics, computational chemistry, biological assay data to support read across) in hazard assessment.
  • Quantitative linking of external exposure models to internal exposure models and health effects, via PBK modelling.
  • Proposing and modelling adverse outcome pathways, to link exposure to ultimate health effects, via machine learning of literature and systems biology modelling.
  • Omics and bioinformatics data analysis for biomarker discovery of internal exposure and early health effects.

You may also collaborate with the Technology Cluster modelling and statistics group, which delivers the computational sciences to support our activities and/or Technology Cluster Exposure Assessment and Risk Management which delivers the external exposome/exposure expertise needed to link exposure to hazards/health effects. Together, we offer training possibilities in hazard assessment and toxicology, systems toxicology, toxicogenomics, toxicoinformatics, bioinformatics, PBPK modelling, computational chemistry, computational drug target safety assessment, textmining, epidemiology, exposure assessment and modelling, life science databases, occupational hygiene, safe by design concepts, specific expertise on industrial chemicals, asbestos, endotoxins, food allergens and immunology, and statistics.

What do we require of you?

  • You are a Master’s student in life sciences, with a passion for toxicology and/or risk assessment and/or affinity or interest in learning applied bioinformatics and/or computational biosciences
  • You enjoy being part of a multi-disciplinary team, but can also work independently.
  • Good communication skills.
