What will you be doing?

TNO is looking for a student to study the migration for ROS 1 to ROS 2: At the Automotive Campus in Helmond TNO is developing software for automated driving vehicles. The Robot Operating System (ROS) is a set of software libraries and tools that help you build robot applications. As a middleware ROS 1 is used and interested to know what the upsides are for migrating to ROS 2.

We want to get a better understanding of the migration to ROS 2 with the large code base we have at the moment. To get a good overview of the performance, stability & security differences we need this migration study. Part of this study is a migration case, which means migrating a ROS 1 simulation to ROS 2 simulation.

The study consists of two parts.

1. Benchmarking study: The student will define key performance indicators (KPI) for a robotics middleware and evaluate the performance differences between ROS 1 and ROS 2 given these KPI’s.

2.Realization study: TNO will define a demonstration use case which is currently implemented in ROS 1 and student will show the same use case implemented in ROS 2 if possible. An Important research question is knowing which parts of the migration are trivial and which parts might be difficult.
