What will you be doing?
In the automotive industry, the information regarding the safety of systems is gathered in a safety case. The information in a safety case is often regarded as company IP and therefore is usually guarded closely. However, with the advent of automated driving, the need to share safety information is pressing. Similar to avionics, where industry openly shares safety-related issues, we need to work on methods to encourage companies to share safety-related information.
This information may be shared on multiple levels - first, information that is shared with the road authority as proof of safe operation of the systems; Second, information that is shared with partners, and finally the information that is shared publicly.
In this project, we aim to study the content of safety case and create a sanitation procedure that preserves the company sensitive information, while shares the safety-related information in a meaningful way.
The objectives of this assignment are:
- Enabling an effective distribution of safety-critical information by providing a sanitization procedure for safety cases.
- Creating an overview of available information on safety case elements (arguments, evidence, safety analysis) and their connections.
In this project, you will research the literature for the available methods and tools for safety case management. You will survey the information that is stored in safety cases by comparing the examples from TNO and already publicly available safety cases. You make a comparison between the solutions used different industries such as health care, avionics, and railways. Moreover, you will design and conduct a survey study to understand the various viewpoint on requirements for sanitization process from different companies perspective. By gathering fundamental knowledge about functional safety assurance, you will define a sanitization procedure and demonstrate the validity of the procedure by applying the method to running projects at IVS.
In this project, you will collaborate with the University of Toronto as well as the Eindhoven University of Technology to find a solution for theseto this problem. This project has the potential of growing into a PhD level research, depending on the findings and quality of results.
What do we require of you?
- Self-motivated and proactive student, MSc level in the field of automotive engineering
- Ability to think in conceptual level and experience for connecting concepts to engineering artifacts
- Eager to work in a dynamic research environment
- Background in software and safety is preferred
- Knowledge regarding functional safety and ISO 26262

The Integrated Vehicle Safety (IVS) department of TNO is actively pursuing innovative technologies, methodologies, and tools that contribute to cooperative and automated driving. This department has been leading the automated driving program of TNO. At IVS we research the latest methods regarding functional safety and apply them to smart mobility and automated driving. We work on both European and customer projects on various safety-critical applications such as platooning, valet parking, autopilot. We have a wide range of expertise regarding automotive ranging from control, software, human factors, assessment, and safety.
