What will you be doing?
At the Sustainable Technology for Industrial Processes department of TNO, we support the transition towards a low-carbon future by industrial innovation. One of the options to re-use CO2 rich waste streams is to ferment them into valuable chemicals. Typically fermentation products are highly diluted, and thus the downstream process to recover pure product is highly energy intensive. Your project will focus on experimental work, that will investigate novel separation technologies to recover targeted chemicals, and in this way increase energy efficiency of the overall process. Focus is on the recovery of carboxylic acids with technologies such as eg. pervaporation and back extraction.
What do we require of you?
You are an enthusiastic HBO student looking for an internship of 3-6 months. You have a chemical engineering, chemistry or material science/engineering background and are eager to learn about energy efficient separation technologies and CO2 utilisation. You are pro-active and independent with good communication skills in English. You will be working with a diverse team of scientists/engineering/technicians with a wide variety of expertise to make up for a great learning experience. Practical laboratory experience is necessary for this position.
What can you expect of your work situation?
The STIP department has an excellent track record in process technology development. Unique modelling and experimental tools have been developed over the years, including demonstration installations that can be found all over the world. Within the roadmap ‘Towards a CO2 neutral industry’, we collaborate with a variety of partners, including large enterprises, SMEs, universities and government organizations, to achieve the decarbonization of the industrial sector. We offer a challenging and international working environment in a field that is of eminent importance for our future needs. In your work you will be integral part of a project team and it will include interaction with TNO employees and fellow students, developing both your technical and personal skills. You will be working on real industrial cases, being supervised and coached by experienced TNO staff. You will be part of a multi-disciplinary research team, which includes scientists, engineers, consultants and technicians. You will be located at the TNO site in Petten, in the north-west of Netherlands. The area, well-known for its sandy beaches, provides a quiet and most beautiful environment for outdoor activities (boating/sailing, swimming, biking, etc.) with easy access to the nearby larger cities such as Amsterdam and Alkmaar.
